Turning Photography as a Hobby Into a Profession

Photography is an art form that anyone can learn.  Although the great photographers throughout history certainly stand out amongst amateurs, nearly anyone can learn this art form with enough patience, work, and passion.  There is definitely talent required when it comes to a good photographer, but the basics of photography are like a formula that must be practiced and perfected.  With enough knowledge and diligence, you can turn your photography hobby into a profession you actually enjoy doing every day.

One of the best things you can do if you are interested in photography is to take a beginner’s class.  There is a lot to know about the mechanics of a camera that might be hard to understand without taking a class.  The aperture, shutter speed, ISO and more all play important roles when it comes to capturing a truly good photograph.  After learning the basics of how to work a camera, there are classes that can teach you photo theory, which explains how to capture a beautiful picture.  The rule of third, the golden ratio, color theory and much more can be learned to help you understand why people are drawn to the way certain photographs work.

As a good DC photographer these days, you also need to have a thorough understanding of how Photoshop works.  Photoshop is a computer program that allows you to digitally edit and manipulate digital photo images. I once had a photography teacher who said that photography these days is about 30% the original raw image and 70% Photoshop skills.  This is extremely true.  You can take a so-so image and manipulate it into exactly what you want using your Photoshop skills.

If you want to take your photography hobby to a professional level, you will need to practice your skill on a daily basis.  If you love portrait photography and want to become a wedding DC photographer, ask friends or family members to model for you before you try booking real couples.  The thing is that you need to build up a good portfolio to show future clients so that they understand what your style is.  One of the most important things to understand as a beginning photographer is that you are going to have to do a lot of work for free in the beginning in order to really establish yourself among the masses of other photographers.  Like anything, practice makes perfect when it comes to photography.
